Worried about developing back problems? Did you know there are factors that can increase your chances of suffering back pain? Lets start off with physical factors.

Can you believe men are more likely to have back problems than women? Back pain usually occurs around middle age and progresses as men get older. The risk also increases if one has had a back injury in the past or has a family history of back problems. Women, on the other hand, may develop back problems during pregnancy.

Other physical factors that contribute to the increased risk of back pain include spine problems (including spinal compression fractures) and a history of back surgery.

Are you getting enough regular exercise? If youre at a high risk of developing back problems and youre leading a sedentary lifestyle, you are even more prone to back pain.

Prolonged sitting or not observing proper techniques when lifting heavy objects can also lead to back problems; in the latter case, this includes bending or twisting during the lifting process.

Did you know smoking can also increase the risk of back problems? So does being overweight; the excess pounds bring strain and pressure on the back muscles. Being overweight may also mean the person is in poor physical condition, which is likely attributable to leading a sedentary lifestyle. Lack of exercise may mean weak or rigid muscles.

Other lifestyle factors for back problems may include poor posture. If you slouch or slump as you stand or sit, it can strain or otherwise damage the muscles in the back. As a rule of thumb, try to keep your hips, shoulders and ears in a straight line; thats good posture.
