Back pain is the fifth-most common reason why people visit their doctors. It is also the third-most common reason why people undergo surgery. While most incidents of back pain are attributed to heavy lifting or bad posture, there are a lot of things that cause it. Todd Sinett, coauthor of the book The Truth about Back Pain, reveals, Back pain is rarely one catastrophic event, but several situations [are] combining to create pain.

Here are some of the daily habits that take their toll on your back.

Staying Chained to Your Chair: Compared to standing up, sitting puts more pressure on your spine. If you factor in bad posture on a jam-packed day at the office, your back is likely to suffer more. To reduce pressure on the spine while sitting, position yourself at a 135-degree angle. Get up, stretch regularly or walk around the office for a couple of minutes to relieve the compression on the spine.

Long Drive: Hunching behind the steering wheel can cause you to slump forward, causing your shoulders to round and your chest muscles to tighten. The stress produced by this bad posture can also cause neck and back pain. Darran W. Marlow, DC, of the Texas Back Institute advises drivers to sit at a 90-degree angle and close to the steering wheel.

Doing Crunches: Todd Sinett says sit-ups and crunches do more harm than good. While your intention was to build a strong core, crunches cause a condition of excessive compression, which results in the spine curving forward in a C-like shape, Sinett adds.
